Math: February 6th is our 100th day of school! We will be doing many math activities that focus on counting to 100. We will be learning to skip count by 10's to 100 and will be focusing on numeracy this month. We will also be introducing addition this month.
Language: In language we will be learning the letters e, l, k and y. We are focusing on printing using lower case letters. Our students brainstormed what they wished our dramatic play centre to turn into this month and they decided to turn it into a castle. We will be reading many stories about medieval times. While reading these stories we will be focusing on making inferences. Students will say what they know about this topic, what makes sense in the story, look for clues in the pictures and words, and identify ideas change as they learn more about the story.
Science: We will be exploring and experimenting with colours this month. We will be learning that primary colours are red, blue, and yellow. We will do many hands on experiments to find out that mixing primary colours makes secondary colours!
We also have a very exciting addition to our classroom! We have two hamsters that have joined our class. We will be learning about hamsters and how to take care of them. We will also be focusing on showing kindness and respect to our hamsters and each other.

Science: We did a fun experiment this week. We put drops of food colouring in milk to start. First we noticed that the drops of colour floated on the top of the milk and didn't mix in like it does with water. Next, Ms. Rasiuk explained that she was going to make her finger magic by putting a drop of dish soap on her finger and then touch the milk. We predicted what would happen. When she touched the milk the colours moved away from her finger and then began swirling and making interesting patterns. We observed that some new colours were made when the food colouring mixed with each other. Next, we tried touching the surface of the milk ourselves. Nothing happened! Finally, we touched the milk with dish soap on our finger and observed the colours moving.
Science: We experimented with coloured water. We tried mixing different primary coloured water together to form secondary colours. Then we experimented with different combinations to see what we could create. For example, when we mixed all our colours, we discovered we created a dark brown.
Math: Number Sense: We learned about different ways we can make 10 this week. We played with a 10 frame and then wrote down the different combinations we discovered that make 10.
We did a really fun art/science experiment based off of the book Mouse Paint. The book focuses on mixing primary colours to form secondary colours. Each student painted their hands two different primary colours and printed their hands on paper. Next, they rubbed their hands together and saw how magically a new colour was formed! We learned that red + blue = purple, red + yellow = orange, and yellow + blue = green. Finally, our poem of the week was also based off of this book.
Math: Number Sense- We explored all the possible addition combinations for numbers one through ten by using manipulatives.
We had a lot of fun this week by creating a snow sensory table. We observed that when the snow began to melt, it was easier to manipulate to form snowballs and structures.
Science: We experimented with colours this week with eye droppers containing red, yellow and blue food colouring. We made tie-dye pictures and rainbows. We observed how the primary colours mixed to form secondary colours.
Math: Number Sense: The SK students practiced addition this week. They had to glue down hearts that corresponded to their addition statement and count the total then write the answer. JK students had to count and glue down the correct number of hearts to match the number on their page.
Language: We did some writing about our friends for valentine's day. Each student drew a name out of a hat and had to write about why the person they drew was a good friend. We turned all of our work into a class book.
We each made one of these Valentine's Cards for a friend in our class.
We read "The Paper Bag Princess" this week and decided to make our own paper back prince/princesses as an art activity.
Victoria Village had someone very special visit us on the 100th day of school. Mrs. Miklasevics mother in law came in! It was her birthday on the 100th day of school and she turned 100 years old! It was such an amazing experience for everyone to hear about her life. The students were able to ask questions to Mrs. Miklasevics and we all sang her happy birthday!
Thank you to everyone who brought in 100 of something from home! We had a great time sharing our collections and talking about the different ways we counted to 100!
Every kindergarten student decorated a square to be put together to make a quilt with 100 patches!
Math: Students worked in partners to make 100 dots! We did 10 groups of 10 to count to 100.
We made a gumball machine with 100 gumballs in them! We used 10 different paint colours and students had to do 10 gumball prints of each colour.
We made fruit loop necklaces that had 100 fruit loops on them.
For 100's day we drew a picture of what we would look like when we're 100 years old!
Math: We weighed a stuffed bear using bear counters. We counted how many small, medium, and large bear counters equaled the stuffed bear, then we wrote our results.
It was the 100th day of school on February 6th so we did a bunch of 100's activities. For part of our writing this week we made a little booklet and wrote and drew what we wish we had 100 of and what we would never want 100 of.
Here is a picture of our two new pets! We brainstormed names and voted so here on the left we have Chipotle Ronaldo and on the right is Toby Tumbleweed!
